Vocal Music / Secular Songs

“Two Sephardic Songs” for mezzo-soprano and piano or guitar

“Songs from a Cook Book” for soprano and guitar or piano

Songs From a Cook Book

This is a version for mezzo-soprano and guitar of four short, witty songs set to poetry based on recipes from “Mastering the Art of French Cooking” by Julia Child. The songs also exists in a version for soprano and piano and SATB with piano.

Vocal music / Sacred Songs

“Three Canticles of Light for two sopranos (or SA choir) and piano

“Three Canticles of Light” is a setting for two sopranos or SA choir and piano of three short sacred texts about light from three faith traditions: Judaism, Islam, and Christianity. My intent is to underscore the similarities, rather than differences, between the religions by using some common melodies, harmonies, and contrapuntal ideas in all three settings. While the Hebrew text (“Baruch ha’or b’olam”) and Arabic text (“Allahuma Aj’Al Fi Qalbi Nouran”) emphasize the holiness of the light within and around us, the Latin text (“Lux Aeternum”)–from the Roman Catholic Requiem Mass–reassures us that everlasting light will shine upon us throughout all eternity. The duration of the piece is approximately 6 minutes. Available on the J.W. Pepper My Score website.

“Prayer of St. Francis” for baritone, flute and piano
